The one-in-every-crowd at Foxboro Stadium on Tuesday for the Argentina-Greece game was Dave Halligan, who drove down from Maine with his four soccer-playing kids. He was wearing an Ireland shirt.

“I always root for Ireland, except when the United States is playing. Today we’re Argentines,” said Halligan, a high school soccer coach in Falmouth, where, he says, the number of kids playing soccer has gone from 50 to 500 in the last decade.
