Tiger Woods of Cypress defeated San Diego’s Kevin Riley on Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the California Golf Assn.’s six-day State Amateur Championship.

Woods, 18, who was 2-under par in his 3-and-2 victory over Riley, will play Todd Andrews, 22, of Solana Beach this morning, with the winner advancing to the afternoon’s semifinals. The scheduled 36-hole finale will be played Saturday.

A three-time USGA Junior Champion, Woods has played Pebble Beach 8 under in his two matches and the second stroke-play qualifying round. Andrews was even par in his 1-up victory over 1993 Northern California Golf Assn. player of the year Randy Haag.

Steve Woods, a senior-to-be at San Jose State, continued his par-breaking ways with a 6-and-4 victory over Yorba Linda’s Chris Berry. Woods made four birdies (Nos. 2-4-12-14) and was 3 under for the day.

That performance came after shooting 69-73--142 to claim medalist laurels. Woods was 1 under in Wednesday’s first-round, 8-and-6 victory over Jamey Forsyth.

Steve Woods, 22, will play Helendale’s Mark Johnson, 38, the oldest surviving player. Johnson played 3-under par in his 4-and-3 victory over 1990 champion Charlie Wi.

In the other upper-bracket quarterfinal, Solana Beach’s 21-year-old Tim Hart will play Rocklin’s Steve Burdick, 20. Hart had to go 22 holes before defeating Elk Grove’s Jeff Gilchrist.

Burdick, who Wednesday beat defending champion Casey Boyns, was 1 under in his 3-and-2 victory over 1982 champion Gary Vanier.

The second match in the lower bracket will pit 21-year-old Kevin Marsh of Goleta against Ed Cuff, 32, of Temecula. Marsh was 1 under in his 3-and-2 victory over Roger Tambellini. Cuff played even-par golf while nipping David Hutchens of Whittier with a birdie on the 19th hole.
