SUMMERTIME : Festivals, Fairs Fill Free Days : Songs, storytelling and soccer are on the menu at a variety of events scheduled over the coming months.

Fourth of July celebrations aren’t the only summertime festivities. There are a handful of festivals planned for the coming months. Here’s a sample.

* The 14th annual Summer Solstice Folk Music, Storytelling and Dance Festival, sponsored by the California Traditional Music Society, takes place this weekend at Soka University, 26800 W. Mulholland Highway, Calabasas.

The event features performances, activities, more than 300 hands-on workshops, singing, dancing and storytelling. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own instruments to jam with other music-makers. Special programs in Scottish fiddle, harp, storytelling and children’s music are planned. More than 50 booths will offer jewelry, ceramics and other wares.

Hours: 7:30 to 10:30 tonight, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets: $6 tonight, $20 Saturday and Sunday. Parking is $3. Call (818) 342-7664.

* The 47th Annual Family Fiesta at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center, 700 N. Sunnyside Ave., Sierra Madre, happens this weekend. The fiesta offers entertainment, carnival rides, games, a boutique, food and guided tours of the retreat center.

Hours are 11 a.m to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free. Call (818) 355-7188.

* SoccerFest runs from July 8 to 17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in celebration of World Cup USA 1994, which will have its final match July 17 at the Rose Bowl.

SoccerFest is billed as a 500,000-square-foot soccer theme park featuring celebrities, entertainment, soccer clinics, skills contests, games, prizes and international foods.

General admission is $10 advance, $12 at the gate; $6 advance, $8 at the gate for seniors and children 12 and younger. The center is at 1201 S. Figueroa St. Call (800) FUN-IN-94.

* The San Fernando Valley Fair runs from July 21 to 24 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, 480 Riverside Drive, Burbank.

Activities for this year’s fair, which has “We’ve Got Your Fun Covered” as its theme, include a rodeo, music, pig races and carnival rides. The fair also features competitions in home arts, industrial and technology education, farming, gardening and flowers, small and large livestock, and an open horse show.

Hours: noon to 10:30 p.m. July 21 and 22, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. July 23 and 24. Admission is $5, children 11 and younger are free. Parking is $3. On opening day, seniors (55 and older) and youths (15 and younger) will be admitted free. Call (818) 373-4500.

* The 56th Annual Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 5 at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster. The theme of this year’s fair, “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots,” is reflected in its concerts:

* Hank Williams Jr., Aug. 29. Tickets: $17 to $25.

* Randy Travis, Aug. 30. Tickets: $17 to $25.

* REO Speedwagon, Aug. 31. Tickets: $12 to $20.

* Clint Black, Sept. 1. Tickets: $17 to $25.

* The Smothers Brothers with comedian Carrot Top, Sept 2. Tickets: $17 to $25.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and concert tickets include the fair admission of $5 general, $3 for seniors 65 and older and children 6 to 12. Children under 6 and military personnel in uniform will be admitted free to the fair. Additionally, tickets to all arena events are $8 and $10.

Other attractions at the fair will include lawn mower races, a demolition derby, world championship wrestling, the rural Olympics, monster trucks, and a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Assn. rodeo.
