SUMMERTIME : Arty, Eclectic Outings : From concerts in the park to ‘Silents Under the Stars,’ it’s the season to be outside.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES; Michael Szymanski writes regularly for The Times.

Temperatures are heating up, but rather than ducking inside, check out the offerings that are going on in the great outdoors. For entertainment under the sun--and occasionally under the stars--local venues offer everything from hikes to hoedowns, disco to mariachi, classical concerts to classic films.

Michael Marks from the Santa Clarita Parks Recreation and Community Services Department says the fifth season of that city’s summer concert series is more eclectic than ever. Organizers for all the local outdoor concerts encourage members to bring a picnic and a blanket because most of the seating is on the grass. Gail Stewart of the Burbank Park and Recreation Department suggests tickets be reserved for the large popular concerts planned this summer at the Starlight Bowl.
