BOYLE HEIGHTS : Parents at School Win Fight for Summer Vacation

The parents at Euclid Avenue Elementary School got their way after all--the school will use a traditional summer vacation calendar.

The Boyle Heights school became the focus of controversy in April for using a voting system in which each teacher’s ballot counted for 6.32 votes and each parent’s counted for one. The teachers, who wanted a year-round calendar, used their votes to overrule the parents’ desire for a summer vacation.

In a new election Thursday night in which a one-person, one-vote rule was used, an overwhelming majority of parents approved the traditional schedule. The Euclid episode had become a flash-point for many parents who say their voices are muted in shaping Los Angeles Unified School District policy. To help resolve the dispute, the district brought in professional mediators.
