Garden Grove Schools Budget Makes No Cuts

The governing board of the Garden Grove Unified School District approved its 1994-95 budget, a $178.9-million spending plan that maintains all current programs and staffing levels.

The Board of Education unanimously approved the budget without comment during its regular meeting this week.

District officials said they avoided having to make cuts in spite of inadequate state funding partly because they often left vacant positions open to save money and encouraged school administrators to reduce expenses whenever possible.

“The district is doing OK. We’re holding our own,” despite this being the fifth consecutive year with no increase in revenue from the state, said Art Becker, district business manager. Based on current projections of state funding, “we believe we can run the same program next year as this year,” he said.

The district is the second largest in the county, serving about 42,000 students. The district covers most of Garden Grove and parts of Westminster, Cypress, Stanton, Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fountain Valley.
