To whom it may concern at ABC:

After avidly following your exclusive coverage of the U.S. Open, I was appalled when you switched during the sudden-death playoff to the O.J. Simpson arraignment while every other station covered the same thing.

You had the only exclusive audience on television and you blew it.

My reaction to the preemption of the NBA playoff game by TV coverage of O.J. Simpson’s procession from Orange County to his home was that seldom in history has more time and effort been expended by anything less significant. I thought that at least The Times would be more professional in its coverage. What I saw Saturday morning was about half of the first section of the newspaper devoted to the subject. It seems that the media has lost all sense of perspective.

It is difficult to fathom the mind-boggling events concerning the O.J. Simpson tragedy. I know I feel a deep sense of sadness for Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and sympathy for their families. As for O.J., I just don’t want to believe that he could commit such a horrific act. I know that some of the evidence seems compelling, but let’s not forget that stranger things have happened than the possibility of Simpson’s innocence. As for his questionable conduct, I think you’d have to walk a mile in O.J.’s cleats before you get the answer to those questions. Even then you’ll probably only discover that you’re walking in some pretty big cleats.
