Franco Baresi, the Italian captain, faces knee surgery after being injured in the first half of a 1-0 victory over Norway on Thursday and will be out for the rest of the World Cup.

German midfielder Andy Moeller, anticipated as being one of the stars of the World Cup, might be dropped from the world champions’ lineup for their last Group C match against South Korea at Dallas.

Moeller has failed to live up to expectations and Coach Berti Vogts said Friday that Moeller, 26, seemed to be afraid of contact.

Italian star Roberto Baggio was still struggling with being replaced 21 minutes into Thursday’s game against Norway, saying Friday, “I asked (Coach Arrigo Sacchi) if he would have taken Maradona off in the same situation. He said yes, but I think Maradona would have played the whole game.”
