A magnitude 4.2 earthquake centered three miles northwest of Berkeley caused merchandise to fall off shelves and some windows to break in the East Bay early Sunday, authorities said. No injuries were reported after the earthquake on the Hayward Fault, which was reported at 1:42 a.m. after a 3.2 foreshock 12 minutes earlier.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the depth of the quake, which awakened residents through much of the Bay Area, was four miles.
