It was all Greek to Richie Whitt of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, covering Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in World Cup soccer.
He wrote: “(Nigerian Coach Clemens) Westerhof, who speaks English and Spanish, became confused when a translator relayed his postgame remarks to German reporters. ‘I didn’t understand that question,’ a confused Westerhof said, looking at the translator. ‘Oh, you were translating. Thank you and God very much.’ ”
Westerhof, who is Dutch, speaks German. The translation was in Bulgarian.
