Consider Bicycles

Share

While the focus of the “Riders Wanted” article on June 14 was on public transit, I object to the statement “Car pools and city buses are currently the only option for residents cutting down on car use.”

Has no one considered bikes?

No, it’s not too dangerous. I formerly rode Victoria Avenue (from the beach, past the 101 intersection to Ralph’s) and currently ride Channel Islands Boulevard (Victoria Avenue to C Street). Those are two of the busiest intersections of road around.

Too far? Unless you must go more than 8 to 10 miles from work, figure on 40-50 minutes maximum (average 12 m.p.h). And it’s great exercise.

Nowhere to keep the bike? This could be a problem. All I can say is thanks to open-minded employers who let us keep our bikes inside.

Barring transporting kids or equipment during the commute, probably the most prevalent excuse is lethargy. Think about it.
