One of the nastier press comments was reported in the Daily Telegraph, quoting the Jornal do Brasil of Rio de Janeiro.

“The anti-Irish columnist, writing under the pseudonym ‘Verissimo,’ says the Irish look like Norwegians pretending to be Englishmen and give the impression of having been selected by the ‘HY’ method.”

This, he claims, consists of Jack Charlton entering an Irish pub at random, looking around at the customers and with the words “Hey, you,” picking out those who have a “typical soccer player’s face, or that of a criminal, or preferably a combination of both.”

He then takes them to a nearby field where they start training--”many with their pint of Guinness in their hands.”
