The London Evening Standard

The worst World Cup scenario, apart of course from the Republic of Ireland going out, would be if the United States failed to qualify for the next stage.

There were more than 90,000 people in the Rose Bowl to see their new heroes go down, 1-0, to Romania, and as my wife Judith pointed out as we watched the match: “What’s it going to be like if the United States ever becomes interested in football?” . . .

If the Americans really are serious about making “soccer” a big sport over here, watch out. They will be turning out 6-foot 7-inch central defenders who can run 10 seconds for the 100 meters.
