WORLD CUP USA ’94 / THE FIRST ROUND : Spotlight : REACH OUT AND COACH SOMEONE

Because of some earlier colorful language used during an altercation with a game official, Jack Charlton, Ireland’s coach, was forced by FIFA to watch Tuesday’s game against Norway from the stands.

That didn’t stop him from sending instructions to assistant coach Maurice Setters by telephone, however.

“I watched the match from where the television cameras are, just to the right of the center line,” Charlton said. “It was quite good up there. The only thing was, you’re not in the presence of your players. So you pick the phone up and you tell Maurice what you want him to do and how to handle the situation. To Maurice’s credit, he did everything exactly right today.”
