Jimmy Maura; Actor, Costumer

Jimmy Maura, a former stage actor and extra who found a second career as a costumer on such television programs as “Married . . . With Children” and “Silver Spoons,” has died at a Culver City hospice. He was 51.

Maura, a former Sherman Oaks resident who moved to Los Angeles several years ago, died Wednesday of cancer, said his niece, Gina Maura of Studio City.

According Marti Squyres, costume designer for “Married . . . With Children,” Maura joined the Fox sitcom as a costumer several years ago. His responsibilities included dressing the show’s male actors, including Ed O’Neill, who portrays Al Bundy.

“He took a lot of pride in what he did and how he handled the actors,” Squyres said.

Born James Martin Maura in Rome, N. Y., he left home following high school to pursue an acting career in New York. After appearing in several productions, including “Teahouse of the August Moon,” he moved to Los Angeles.

He studied acting in Pasadena and appeared as an extra on such programs as “Archie Bunker’s Place” before becoming a costumer. Prior to “Married . . . With Children,” Maura worked on such series as “Silver Spoons” and “Rachel Gunn, R. N.”

Maura is survived by his mother, Lucille Swarmer of Satsuma, Fla., and two brothers, Peter Maura of Rome, N. Y., and Luke Maura of Las Vegas.

There will be no funeral, although a private family service will be held at a later date. Aftercare California Cremation & Burial Society in Van Nuys is handling arrangements.
