SAVED IN SPACE: One small step for Congress, one giant leap for Canoga Park. That’s one way of looking at the recent House vote to fund the proposed space station. Much of the work on the project would be done by about 1,000 employees at Rockwell International’s Rocketdyne Division in Canoga Park. . . . “Clearly, those jobs would be at risk if the space station were to be canceled,” said corporate spokesman Bill Blanning.

JUST A SECOND: You never have enough time, do you? Of course not. Well, Friday was different. At midnight, Britain’s Royal Observatory added one second to the world’s clocks to compensate for a slowing of the Earth’s movement around the sun. . . . Ronnie Schell, honorary mayor of Encino and a veteran comedian, was excited about the extra second: “It gave me time to read all of my fan mail.”

TA-TA ‘TINA: Martina Navratilova leaves the court, and the game of tennis, after losing Saturday to Conchita Martinez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the 1994 Wimbledon Ladies Championship Final. “Billie Jean King planted the seed for the serve-and-volley game in women’s tennis, and Martina cultivated it,” said Rich Kinuya, tennis pro and coach at Harvard-Westlake High School in Studio City. At tournaments he takes students to, Navratilova has been “the only player who . . . signed autographs like she promised.” (C1)

RAPE VICTIMS’ GAIN: Convicted sex offenders must disclose their HIV status to their victims under a new law just signed by Gov. Wilson (B1). Assemblywoman Paula Boland (R-Granada Hills) sponsored the measure that was triggered by the 1991 case of Valley serial rapist Monette Johnson.

VALLEY FORGED: As the Founding Fathers were meeting in Philadelphia, Spanish explorers were making history at this end of the country. See Valley Briefing (B2).
