The ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front and its allies scored an overwhelming victory by securing 484 of the 547 seats in June 5 elections for a constituent assembly, the Election Board said Sunday.

The new assembly is mandated to approve a new constitution for Ethiopia following the overthrow of the Marxist military dictatorship in 1991.

The election was boycotted by groups opposed to constitutional proposals for local autonomy that they fear could destroy Ethiopian unity.
