WORLD CUP USA ’94 / QUARTERFINALS : Spotlight : TRASH?

Dunga was not a happy midfielder after Brazil’s 1-0 victory over the United States. He looked upset and snapped terse answers during the postgame news conference on Monday.

But once his answers in Portuguese were translated into English, Dunga seemed like another boring athlete mouthing cliches. After a few minutes, the quotes didn’t seem to be getting any better.

Wrong.

Dunga was a virtual quote machine, according to a Brazilian journalist, who gave a . . . well, more interesting account to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Three Americans called us names,” Dunga said. “It is not the way to play soccer. The result of the game is the way to answer what they said.”

As for the three American players, their names were not revealed in either language--English or Portuguese.
