Week After Being Hit by Bullet, LPGA’s Williams Shoots a 68

A week after being hit by a stray bullet, Kim Williams shot a three-under-par 68, only two strokes back of the leaders in the opening round of the LPGA Jamie Farr Toledo Classic at Sylvania, Ohio.

U.S. Open champion Lauri Merten, Amy Alcott and last week’s winner at Youngstown, Tammie Green, shared the lead with 66s.

Williams was shot last Saturday night as she was approaching a drug store in Niles, Ohio. She was among the leaders in the Youngstown-Warren Classic but was unable to play the final two rounds after being injured.

The bullet remained deeply embedded in a rib after hitting Williams in the neck and traveling through her shoulder.

Williams went to the first-aid room at the conclusion of Friday’s round, and tournament officials said she was unable to speak to reporters.

Meg Mallon was one shot back at 67 and seven golfers joined Williams at 68, including Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez.

Laura Davies , was among seven players who shot 69 on the 6,270-yard, par-71 Highland Meadows Golf Club.
