The Daily Telegraph reported that the World Cup has been a huge success in Great Britain for the bookmakers, many of whom expect USA ’94 to produce the biggest volume of any sports event since betting shops were legalized in 1961.
Graham Sharpe, betting expert at bookmaker William Hill, “the man who would normally spend the summer offering odds about temperatures on ministry roofs, the chance of snow on Christmas Day, 2000, or the sighting of Elvis Presley,” had no doubt about the success.
“This World Cup will generate $90 million,” he said.
The largest single bet at William Hill was $160,000, at 11-10, on Mexico over Bulgaria. Mexico lost on penalty kicks.
