Topics / ARCHITECTURE : Pasadena Complex Wins Beautification Award
After four years and $90 million in renovations, one Colorado Boulevard shopping complex has won the Los Angeles Business Council’s Beautification Award in the historical renovation/adaptive reuse category.
The complex in Old Pasadena has 23 businesses, ranging from bookstores and art galleries to clothing stores and restaurants, as well as the city’s first jail, general store and City Hall, which date back to the late 19th Century.

Design award--One Colorado, the renovated shopping complex in Old Pasadena, recently won a design award from the Los Angeles Business Council. A story on the award in the July 14 San Gabriel Valley section gave the wrong name for the complex and ran with a photograph that showed stores not in the complex.

An outdoor courtyard with sculptures and benches was created from back alleys and brick doors. “It was generic space,” said Scott Bates, an architect who worked on the complex. “But outdoor spaces are just as important as indoor spaces in Southern California. So we designed a place where people can eat and relax.”
The council, which consists of various Los Angeles businesses, has awarded annual beautification certificates since 1970 to recognize and promote the architecture, landscapes and historical renovations in Los Angeles County.
