HOLDING ON: So far, so good for Metrolink. It’s been just under a week since the Golden State-Antelope Valley freeway interchange reopened, and there’s been no decline in ridership from the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys to Los Angeles. . . . But things could change in August, said Metrolink spokesman Peter Hidalgo, because that’s when some commuters who hold monthly passes may choose to go back to driving.

COMING COMET: The big event is only a few days away. No, not the World Cup final. Heavens no. It’s the long-awaited start Saturday of collisions by pieces of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter, which will continue for about a week. . . . The Valley’s amateur astronomers are getting ready. Ray Coutchie of Woodland Hills plans to watch through his telescope near Frazier Park. “I don’t know what I’ll see, but I’m excited,” he said.

BODY TALK: Your words may declare one thing, your body (above) quite another. So says a Pierce College lecturer on body language. A columnist discovers what it means if people cross their arms right over left, or if they stand with open palms. . . . And watch out for those who laugh with their eyes open. Not to be trusted at all. (B5)

MORE GUARDIANS: They’re no angels, but they are doing their best for their community. They are the Guardian Eyes of Van Nuys, a neighborhood watch group that will hold a garage sale this weekend (B3). . . . But don’t confuse them with the Guardian Angels, who set up shop locally last month. “There’s plenty of room for lots of guardians in Van Nuys,” said Eye member Leslie Bashaar.

TANKS AND GOODBYE: The Air Force is on a tank-destroying mission in the Mojave. Edwards Air Force Base is removing underground storage tanks that might pose environmental risks. . . . “We have got the dirtiest tanks out,” said Don Cowen, project manager for the Underground Storage Tanks program (B18).
