The FIFA decision to ban Italy’s Mauro Tassotti for eight games for his foul on Spain’s Luis Enrique in last Saturday’s World Cup match, the first such FIFA decision judged from a video replay, is a hot topic in British sports sections.

In his comment in The Times of London, Rob Hughes observed: “What this is inevitably leading to is instant video replay to decide contentious issues on the field. Those have been anathema to some of us for a decade, but now FIFA has gone this far, it surely will arrive.

“If so, then the sooner the better, for if video is to dictate another facet of sporting life, far better to mete out justice where it can affect the outcome of the foul play, rather than in some retrospective committee.”
