PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Bettis’ Weight (247) Still a Concern

Share

The Rams continue to keep an eye on the off-season weight of second-year tailback Jerome Bettis, who weighed in at 247 pounds, seven over his playing weight, during mini-camp in May. But Bettis worked with a personal trainer in June, and offensive coordinator Chick Harris is confident the focal point of the team’s offense will be in shape by early training camp.

“He’ll lose that (seven pounds) in the first two days of camp,” Harris said. “We know he’ll be in here at his weight. His mom even called me the other day and said she can’t cook for him anymore. No more pork chops or sweet potato pie for him. He’s off that.”

Wide receiver Isaac Bruce, a second-round draft pick who agreed to terms on a three-year contract Tuesday night, is expected to sign by the end of the week. Bruce’s deal leaves the Rams with only one of their 10 draft picks unsigned--first-round selection Wayne Gandy. . . . Outside linebacker Roman Phifer was held out of workouts Wednesday after straining his right hamstring Tuesday.
