BREA : Schools Ratify Fee Accord With City

The Brea Olinda Unified School District board this week approved an agreement that requires the city to pay the district $67,719 for using school facilities for city-sponsored and nonprofit youth programs, classes, activities and sports league games.

The money will be spent on repairs and maintenance to school buildings and fields.

Brea City Council members earlier this month unanimously approved the agreement, which also requires the city to pay the costs of electricity used to light Brea Olinda High School by recreational groups.

The agreement brings an end to a longtime debate on whether to charge the town’s youth groups for using district facilities, said board member Frank Davies.

“What we’re trying to do is recoup some of our costs” of maintaining the school grounds and fields, he said, adding that the city’s money will not cover all costs.

But, for the coming year at least, Davies said the city’s recreational groups will not be charged.

The agreement “is a compromise between the district and the city so as to support all the youths in the community,” he said.

Each year the city will be required to pay the fee, which is expected to increase.
