Tustin to Consider Anti-Smoking Law
A proposal to stiffen controls on smoking in public places is among the items scheduled for consideration by the City Council when it meets at 7 p.m. Monday.
The revised anti-smoking ordinance, which was suggested by Councilwoman Tracy Worley, would prohibit smoking in any facility owned, operated or leased by the city. In addition, retail sales and retail service establishments would be included in the places where nonsmoking areas must be designated.
The ordinance does not call for substantial changes regarding smoking in restaurants. Under current city law, restaurants are required to set aside nonsmoking sections.
Also scheduled to come before the council is a proposal intended to discourage public officials from accepting gifts from people doing business with the city.
The proposal would set a limit of $250 on the value of gifts given to any city official in a calendar year.
Acting City Atty. Lois E. Jeffrey said the proposed ordinance is similar to legal restrictions applying to state officials.
