BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Blyleven Talking About Making Return as Coach

Share

The Angels had informal discussions with former All-Star pitcher Bert Blyleven about the possibility of bringing him back as a pitching coach.

Blyleven, among the Angels’ most popular players during a four-year tenure, hopes to become a minor league pitching coach for the 1995 season.

“I want to get back on the field,” Blyleven said. “Deep down, my heart is in the game of baseball. And there’s no place I’d rather be than here.

“I respect everybody in the front office here, and I think the future of this ballclub is very positive. What they need most right now is more pitching.”

Blyleven, who was providing color commentary on Saturday’s telecast, was offered a job this year to be the Angels’ roving instructor and join short-season Class-A Boise, but Blyleven wants to remain at one location.

“I just want to stay at one place where I can help somebody and see the benefits,” he said. “I just love the game so much. I really enjoy teaching, and that’s what I think I’d be best at. Then, maybe one day, I’d like to try my hand at managing.”

Pitcher Andrew Lorraine, notified Friday that he would be joining the Angels for his first big league call-up, immediately telephoned his mother in Valencia.

First, he wished her a happy birthday. Then, after several more minutes, he casually asked when she was finally going to attend an Angel game.

“Why don’t you come down tomorrow night?” he said. “I’ll leave you tickets.”

Said Lorraine, who graduated June 12 from Stanford with a degree in American Studies: “I don’t think it can get much better than this.’

Lorraine, 21, was 9-3 with a 3.24 earned-run average at triple-A Vancouver. He will pitch in middle relief for his first few outings, but is expected to join the rotation.

Angel catcher Andy Allanson was informed that he must have surgery on his broken right index finger, and is expected to be sidelined the remainder of the season.
