Southland Sod Farms Plays World Cup Role

Oxnard-based Southland Sod Farms emerged a winner in the World Cup soccer matches at the Rose Bowl.

The privately held firm delivered 137,000 square feet of Tifgreen Hybrid Bermuda grass that covered the playing field for games that started with an exhibition June 4 and culminated with Sunday’s championship final. Jurgen Gramckow, Southland’s managing general partner, said his company received $35,000 for the sod, which his crews installed in 15- by 48-inch sections.

“Normally, we do residential work from builders of new housing tracts,” he said. “This was our biggest order for a sporting event.”
