Chile’s Christian Democrats, the leading force in the governing coalition, will elect a new party chairman Saturday. Alejandro Foxley, finance minister until last March, is the top candidate.

The party chairmanship is a potential steppingstone toward the Chilean presidency, and Foxley is known to have presidential ambitions. President Eduardo Frei, who took office in March, was chairman of the party before he launched his winning campaign last year.
