Chicago Tops List for Democrats’ ‘96 Convention
Chicago leads three other cities in the quest to host the 1996 Democratic National Convention, but party Chairman David C. Wilhelm cautioned Tuesday, “It’s not a done deal.”
Wilhelm said in a telephone interview that negotiations with Chicago officials are “further along than any other city” vying for the convention--San Antonio, New Orleans and New York.
Wilhelm, who managed President Clinton’s 1992 campaign, declined to specify what the unresolved issues are. But he said negotiations with Chicago officials needed to be completed before he could forward any recommendation to Clinton, who has the final choice on where the convention will be held.
“We have not made the decision” on a recommendation, Wilhelm said. “I have not communicated any such decision to the President.”
But he acknowledged that party officials were not talking to representatives of the three other cities “in the same way that we are with Chicago.”
