ON THE AIR: Ventura County business leaders urged the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday to scrap a proposed air pollution control plan in favor of a locally written proposal (B1) . . . Although EPA officials made no commitments, they did say that they were impressed with the alternative plan presented during a daylong hearing at the County Government Center. Said Felicia Marcus, regional administrator for the EPA: “It’s a road map to a successful local plan. And if you have that, we’re outta here.”

SOUTHWEST MUSEUM: Several Ventura County cities tried and failed last year to woo the Southwest Museum from its home in Los Angeles . . . Still interested in attracting tourist dollars, the cities of Ventura and Oxnard each unveiled proposals recently to build state-of-the-art aquariums. But they may have lost the upper hand . . . On Wednesday, officials of the Southwest Museum, renowned for its Native American art collection, announced plans to open a branch museum in Santa Barbara. The facility would be part of a larger waterfront complex. And guess what: It would include an aquarium.

BAT LOVERS: They have huge ears, vicious little teeth and love to hang out in caves . . . While they may be disgusting and scary to some, bats are our friends (VENTURA COUNTY LIFE, PAGE 8). And if they are threatened, so are we, say bat lovers Dee and John Lockwood of Ventura . . . Among other things, the couple points out that bats are nature’s bug zappers, whose prey includes crop-damaging insects.
