Four-Star Films : ‘Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams’

Share

Kurosawa, widely regarded as the world’s greatest living film director, has come up with some of the most beautiful images he has ever conceived--and also some of his most ponderous moments as well--in this 1990 film. However, what works in the film’s eight episodes, actually inspired by the director’s own dreams, far outweighs what does not. It is rich in the varied contemplations of an octogenarian artist looking back and looking ahead with humor and concern. One of the eight dreams features Akira Terao, left, with Martin Scorsese as Vincent Van Gogh (Cinemax Wednesday at 8 a.m.).
