Seven people have taken out candidacy papers so far for the November city elections, including the only incumbent expected to run for reelection, Mayor Susan Withrow.

Tom Potocki was the first potential candidate to pick up papers last week, on the opening day of the filing period for city elections. Potocki, a board member on the El Toro Water District, was also one of the leaders of the Aegean Hills annexation drive.

Another candidate is Larry Gilbert, a businessman and longtime critic of City Hall’s spending habits, who is a fixture at City Council meetings.

Also taking out papers were Mirid Weidner, who works at home, and Neil Lonzinger, a businessman.

Lonzinger, a neighbor of Gilbert’s, decided to run for the council after several long discussions between the two men about Mission Viejo politics.

Withrow obtained her filing papers Wednesday, while two more potential candidates, attorney Joseph Saunders and computer specialist Keni Cyr-Rumble, came to City Hall on Friday afternoon.

The filing period ends Aug. 12, unless at least one incumbent declines to run for reelection. The filing period would then be extended to Aug. 17.

Incumbent council members Robert D. Breton and Sharon Cody have both said they will not run for office in 1994.
