HAWTHORNE : City to Study Whether to Retain Fire Dept.

Share

The City Council voted Monday to study whether to keep the city Fire Department, join the Los Angeles County Fire District or cooperate with neighboring cities.

The cash-strapped city slashed more than $800,000 from the city Fire Department budget this year and eliminated several department management positions, Interim City Manager James A. Algie said. The cuts have delayed regular maintenance of fire equipment and the scheduled replacement of a fire engine, said Hawthorne Fire Capt. Mike S. Mungovan.

The study, which could cost as much as $20,000, will determine how much money will be saved if the city changes its fire service, Algie said. The study is scheduled to begin in the next few weeks.
