Strike at Auto Plant Averted: General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers tentatively agreed on a local contract for workers who build most of GM’s Cadillacs. The agreement averted a strike that would have shut the plant. Members of UAW Local 22 were set to stop work Wednesday at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant when they received word of the agreement just before a strike deadline, said Susan Lutz, secretary to a vice president of the local. About 4,350 production and skilled trades workers build Cadillac DeVilles, Sevilles and Eldorados at the plant. Fleetwood models are the only Cadillacs not produced there. Details of the agreement were not immediately available from union or company officials.
