A tanker truck overturned on the northbound Antelope Valley Freeway near Acton on Wednesday, spilling about 2,000 gallons of gasoline, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The 9:10 a.m. accident occurred north of Escondido Canyon Road and closed two of the freeway’s three northbound lanes for about seven hours while Los Angeles County hazardous materials crews cleaned up the spill, CHP Officer Chuck Curtis said.

“They are pumping the remaining gas out of the truck before they move (it),” Curtis said.

The double-axle tanker truck, carrying 9,000 gallons of gas, struck an abandoned car and swerved off the freeway and overturned, Curtis said.

The driver, Clinzell Washington, 57, of La Puente, suffered minor injuries. He is an employee of Evans Dedicated Systems of Los Angeles, Curtis said.

Traffic was backed up for about three miles as the evening rush hour approached, CHP officers said.
