IBM to Shut Ambra Unit: IBM had formed Ambra Computer Corp. two years ago in Raleigh, N.C., to make inexpensive personal computers for sale directly to customers. The closure is one of several cost-cutting actions announced in International Business Machine’s PC division. The unit will eliminate 1,500 to 2,000 jobs, nearly 20% of its work force. Competing most directly with Dell Computer and Gateway 2000, Ambra sold its computers through phone and catalogue orders rather than IBM’s sales force and wholesalers.
