Mountain Lion Killed in Schoolyard Tree
A game warden shot and killed a mountain lion that had perched in a schoolyard tree early Thursday morning.
Authorities were called by a woman who reported seeing a lion peeking at her through a window. When Monterey County sheriff’s deputies went to investigate, they found the lion in the tree watching the playing children.
Sheriff’s deputies notified the Department of Fish and Game, which sent a game warden to the location. The lion was determined to be a threat to people in the area, and was shot and killed.
“Once the animal is that acclimated, not afraid of humans, it is going to cause problems in the area,” said Capt. Ed Nagel of the Department of Fish and Game.
The recent killing of a jogger by a mountain lion in Northern California has affected recent decisions when lions are in populated areas, Nagel said.
