POINT MUGU : Ideas to Be Pooled for Joint Airfield Plan

Share

An information clearinghouse is being organized for the proposed joint civilian-military use of the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station, officials have announced.

The Joint Use Citizens Advisory is being organized and will soon schedule a series of meetings where questions will be answered by specialists working for the Joint Use Investigative Committee in an informal atmosphere, said Gerry Northfield, a spokesman for the committee.

In addition, hourlong public “briefings” on the airfield proposal are being planned before each of the monthly meetings of the executive committee.

“It’s our intent to make this a conduit in which members of the public can get information straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak,” Northfield said.

The Navy has offered to share the air station’s runway with the county to help defray operating costs. The plan calls for joint military, civilian airline and civilian air cargo use of the facility.

A study being conducted by the Southern California Assn. of Governments on the proposal is in its second phase. The study’s first phase, released earlier this year, found the joint use feasible and indicated that as many as 2.5 million passengers would use the facility annually if built.

A 24-hour information line on the Point Mugu proposal--339-4000--has been established.
