Chick Wants City to Purchase Vans

Share

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick proposed Friday that the city immediately buy new vans so the Police Department can transport to local stations special training equipment called for by the reformist Christopher Commission.

The equipment, similar to simulators used to train airline pilots, will help teach officers the appropriate use of force by simulating encounters with suspects and other scenarios. The $270,000 equipment arrived three weeks ago, but is being stored at the Police Academy because the LAPD has no vans to transport it to stations.

Chick, who discovered the situation when she was touring the academy last week, wants the council to spend $40,000 on new vans. The council is set to vote on the issue Friday

The Christopher Commission investigated the LAPD after the March 3, 1991, beating of Rodney G. King and found evidence of brutality and racism in the department.
