Many Southern Californians who enjoyed the experience of watching the Olympic torch being carried through their neighborhoods before the 1984 Games will have the chance to see the torch again.

According to a source in the Atlanta Organizing Committee, the Olympic torch relay before the 1996 Atlanta Games will start its cross-country trek in Los Angeles.

“We will start the torch relay in early May,” the source said Friday, “and we will start in Los Angeles as a tribute to the ’84 Games.”

The torch will then crisscross the country from Los Angeles and remain lit and moving until it lights the Olympic Stadium’s torch during the opening ceremony on Friday, July 19, 1996.
