Six occupants of a Chevy van, including three children, were hospitalized Saturday morning with “moderate to major injuries” after the van careened down an embankment beside the Santa Ana Freeway and overturned, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The accident occurred when the driver, Leticia Sanchez, 23, from Santa Ana, was traveling northbound on the Santa Ana Freeway north of Sand Canyon Avenue. When she moved into another lane, she saw a car nearby and attempted to return to her original lane, according to the CHP. But she oversteered, lost control of the van and ran off the right shoulder and down an embankment.

Leticia Sanchez was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. Passengers Rosio Sanchez, 43, was taken to Irvine Medical Center and Macario Sanchez, 44, was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange. Both Leticia and Macario Sanchez were listed in serious but stable condition Saturday night. There was no information available about Rosio Sanchez.
