OXNARD : 2 Seek Reelection to School Board
Two Oxnard School District board members have announced that they will run for reelection in November.
James J. Suter, 68, has filed his candidacy papers with the county election’s office, and Mary Barreto, 59, said she plans to do so this week. Both candidates are seeking a second term on the board.
Jack T. Fowler, 60, said he planned to step down in December after 20 years on the board of trustees. Fowler said he may begin writing a newsletter that covers school issues in Ventura County.
Barreto, who began campaigning in May, is a family therapist and a professor at Cal State Northridge. Barreto said she wants to continue playing a role in the education of Oxnard children.
“My experience in the first four years will help me to become a more effective board member,” Barreto said.
Suter, who retired as a teacher in 1987 after working 35 years for the Oxnard School District, said he is seeking another four-year term on the board because his work with children is not complete.
“I still have a lot do,” Suter said. “And I want to get parents more involved in the education of their children.”
