Hearing on Plan to Dredge Channel
A plan to dredge contaminated material from the entrance channel to Marina del Rey and store it on the ocean bed of the Port of Los Angeles will be discussed at a public hearing Tuesday.
The Army Corps of Engineers wants to dredge more than 500,000 cubic yards of material, which has accumulated to about 10 feet below the waterline and is creating a navigational hazard, said Larry Simon, a California Coastal Commission staff analyst.
Simon said the commission’s staff will oppose the proposal to dump the debris in a landfill associated with the port’s Pier 300/400 project.
“The material is severely contaminated with pollutants, mainly metals,” he said.
“Ballona Creek drains an incredibly large area of Los Angeles and anything that’s on the street or in a storm drain gets washed into the ocean (at Marina del Rey),” Simon said.
The hearing is set for 10 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 200 S. Park Ave., Long Beach.
