NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Pomona’s May, Battling Cancer, Retires

Darlene May, the winningest women’s basketball coach in NCAA Division II history, retired as coach at Cal Poly Pomona because she suffering from cancer.

May, 53, was diagnosed with breast cancer that has spread to the liver. She has moved to Oregon where she will undergo treatment.

“In lieu of what has happened to my health recently, I realize that there is no possible way I can continue to do my job effectively,” May said in a statement. “I cannot compete in two different games, and I need to fight this battle now.”

May coached Pomona to national championships in 1982, 1985 and 1986. The Broncos won or shared 18 consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships during her 20 seasons as coach. Her record was 519-119.

Assistant coach Paul Thomas has been named interim coach for the 1994-95 season.

Mike Russell, who will be a senior at Rowland High in the fall, and Obea Moore, who will be a sophomore at Muir, won individual championships last week at the Junior Olympics track and field championships at Gainesville, Fla.

Russell won the 800 meters in the young men’s division in 1 minute 52 seconds. Moore won the 400 in the intermediate division in 46.9 seconds. He also anchored the winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams for the L.A. Jets club.

Registration is open for a three-on-three outdoor basketball tournament that will be staged this weekend in Alhambra.

Members of the winning team receive free basketball shoes and the runners-up receive trophies.

Competition will be staged in an open and a lower division. Cost through today is $39 for a three-person team and $45 for a three-person team with a substitute. Fees slightly increase for registrants on Friday and Saturday.

Shane Mosley of Pomona, an alternate on the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 1992, will fight Mauro Gutierrez in a 10-round lightweight bout Saturday night at the L.A. County Fairgrounds in Pomona.

Mosley is 12-0 and Gutierrez is 48-21-5.

The city of Covina is accepting registration for an adult slow-pitch softball league that will begin Aug. 15.

Men’s C, D and C/D leagues, co-ed leagues and a women’s league will be formed. Cost is $440 a team for a 10-game schedule.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking persons interested in becoming football officials for the upcoming high school season.

A golf tournament that will benefit the Hacienda Heights Library will be staged Aug. 22 at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

The $200 entry fee includes golf cart, lunch on the course, dinner and an auction. Proceeds will be used to purchase materials for the children’s collection of the library.
