Annual Home Show to Open Today at CSUN

It’s purely coincidence that their first San Fernando Valley appearance is practically at the epicenter of the nation’s costliest disaster, but organizers of an annual home show in its 18th year certainly aren’t complaining.

Beginning at noon today and running through dusk Sunday, about 400 home repair and remodeling businesses will peddle their wares and services on the campus of Cal State Northridge as part of a giant home show that usually attracts about 40,000 people to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Many of the Valley residents whom organizers are expecting to attend face massive, unplanned home-improvement projects as a result of the Jan. 17 earthquake.

“Here’s the Valley, with 50,000 homes damaged,” said Dan Greene, head of the NEC group Inc., the marketing organization that puts on the home show every year. “This is one place where they can get absolutely everything they need . . . from roofs to rose gardens.”

The show usually is held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, but organizers had scheduled their first Valley appearance just before the quake hit.

The show features every aspect of home repair and remodeling, starting with banks that offer loans. About 10 Valley restaurants will also be represented in a mini “Taste of the Valley.”

A portion of the proceeds will go to a local organization for earthquake recovery. Admission is $5.75 for adults.
