SIMI VALLEY : Train Severs Foot of Sleeping Transient

Share

A passing freight train cut off a transient’s foot Thursday in Simi Valley as he slept beside the tracks, police said.

Doctors at Simi Valley Hospital said they were unable to save Kevin Asunction’s foot, which was almost completely severed shortly after 1 p.m. as he napped near the train tunnel through Santa Susana Pass.

“All we know is he says he was sleeping near the tracks,” said Simi Valley Police Lt. Don Austin. “He put a foot up on the tracks and he got run over by a freight train.”

Asunction apparently was able to crawl to a building nearby for help, and someone called an ambulance for him, Austin said.

Pruner Ambulance rushed him to the hospital, but in several hours of surgery, doctors were unable to reattach his foot, which had been crushed in the mishap, said JoLynn de la Torre, a hospital spokeswoman. Asunction was listed in stable condition late Thursday.
