Four-Star Films : ‘The Conformist’

In this dazzling 1970 film, Bernardo Bertolucci manages to combine the style of Fellini, the sense of period of Visconti and the political commitment of Elio Petri (“Investigation of a Private Citizen”) with complete individuality and a total lack of self-indulgence. Adapted from an Alberto Moravia novel, the film is at once a study of one man and an entire society. Jean-Louis Trintignant (pictured) stars as a respected but troubled philosophy professor so determined to maintain his respectability that he’s ripe for recruitment by a fascist espionage organization just as World War II draws near. (Bravo Monday at 5 and 10 p.m.).
