OXNARD : Man Sentenced to 19 Years for Murder of Sister’s Boyfriend
- Share via
An Oxnard man who fatally stabbed his sister’s boyfriend in a dispute over a car was sentenced to 19 years in state prison on Wednesday.
Donald Culbertson, 24, was sentenced after a judge denied his request to withdraw his June 15 guilty pleas to one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
Culbertson was scheduled to be sentenced last month, but that hearing was postponed after he told the judge he wanted to fire his public defender and take back his pleas.
Superior Court Judge Charles R. McGrath sentenced Culbertson after a second attorney, Willard P. Wiksell, advised the defendant there was no legal basis for withdrawing his pleas.
Police arrested Culbertson for the April slaying of David Rubio, 19, of Oxnard. The assault charges stem from a separate attack by Culbertson on his girlfriend.
