DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES : Voluntary TB Tests to Be Given at Belmont High
- Share via
Health officials will conduct voluntary tuberculosis testing at Belmont High School, the largest in Los Angeles, after a student on the campus near Downtown was hospitalized with the disease.
After meeting with the afflicted student’s classmates, their families and Belmont staff members, officials scheduled TB skin tests at the school on Aug. 22 and 23. Mobile X-ray apparatus will be brought to campus for follow-up testing on anyone whose results are positive.
There are no other known TB cases on Los Angeles Unified School District campuses. In the last few years, from two to four cases have turned up annually, according to a school district health official. A county health official said the Department of Health Services is satisfied with the district’s response to the Belmont case.
State law requires that adults working in schools undergo tests for the disease every four years; however, student testing is required only when a child first enters school.
